How to make Thumbprint Cookies

These cookies are so CUTE and perfect for any occasion! Here is how to make Thumbprint Cookies!

Creamed butter and sugar

First, cream the butter and sugar together in a mixing bowl. (Save some sugar to roll the cookie dough balls in later.) Then mix in the vanilla, egg and egg yolk.

Dry ingredients in mixing bowl

Next, add in the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda) and mix. Once the dough has come together, chill it for about 30 minutes.

Then, using a cookie scoop, make cookie dough balls and place them one at a time in the left over bowl of sugar.

Cookie dough balls covered in sugar

Roll each cookie dough ball around in the sugar until it is completely coated. Then place it on a prepared cookie sheet.

Now, using your thumbprint (or a small teaspoon), create a hole in the top of the cookie.

Cookie dough balls filled with jam

Next, fill each cookie dough ball with a little jam and sprinkle the top with sugar. Now it’s time to bake the cookies!

Glaze Ingredients

Once the cookies have finished baking, set them on a cooling rack to cool. While they are cooling, mix the glaze together.

Thumbprint Cookies Ingredients

Thumbprint Cookies Recipe

Ingredients:
1 cup unsalted butter, softened (2 sticks)
2 1/2 cups granulated sugar (divided)
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 egg
1 egg yoke
3 cups unbleached flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon table salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup strawberry jam or preserves

Glaze Ingredients:
1 cup confectioners (powdered) sugar
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1-2 teaspoons water (I used 1.5 teaspoons for the perfect consistency)

Directions:
With a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat butter and 2 cups of sugar together (save the other 1/2 cup for rolling cookie balls in).
Add vanilla, egg, and egg yolk.
Slowly mix in flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
Chill dough for 30 minutes.
After the dough is chilled, preheat the oven to 375 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Using a 1 tablespoon cookie scoop, create cookie balls and roll them in the remaining sugar before placing them 2” apart on the baking sheet.
Using a 1/2 teaspoon, or your thumb, create a bowl on the top of the cookie.
Fill with jam or fruit preserves (I used strawberry) and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake for 9-10 minutes or until the edges start to brown a little.
Let cookies cool completely on the baking sheet.
Make glaze by mixing all of the ingredients (optional) and drizzle glaze over cookies.

Notes:
● If your cookies spread more than you’d like them to, or your fruit center isn’t centered, you can add more jam or preserves after they bake while the cookies are still hot.

Close Up Of a Bitten Thumbprint Cookie

Do I add the jam before or after baking the cookies?

You can do either, but I like to add the jam before I bake the cookies. If you don’t, you will have to re-indent your cookie for a space to put the jam.

Someone Holding a Thumbprint Cookie

If your cookie is lopsided or the jam shifts some during baking, just add more jam while the cookies cool to make the perfect jam center.
