Patriotic Cookie Recipe
If you want a classic, simple recipe for the 4th of July or any patriotic holiday, grab some red, white, and blue M&Ms and make these M&M cookies!
So simple to make and a favorite! I used chocolate chunks in these cookies, but you can always use chocolate chips – or my favorite, mini chocolate chips!
4th of July M&M Cookies
Yields: 32 cookies
Ingredients:
1 cup butter, softened (2 sticks)
3/4 cup white granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups unbleached flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup chocolate chunks
2 1/2 cups patriotic M&Ms (divided)
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Cream together butter, white sugar, and brown sugar.
Add the eggs and vanilla and mix well.
Slowly stir in flour, salt, and baking soda.
Fold in chocolate chunks and 1 1/2 cups of M&Ms.
Use a 1” cookie scoop or spoon to create 1-1.5” cookie balls and place them 2” apart on the baking sheet.
Top cookie balls with M&MS.
Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the center is set and the edges start to brown.
Sprinkle cookies with remaining M&Ms and let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.
Notes:
- To soften butter, but not melt it, microwave for 10 seconds and additional 5 seconds increments until soft (use a fork to test softness).
- Feel free to use chocolate chips or mini chocolate chips instead of chocolate chunks. Double the amount for a bigger chocolate burst.
- Cookie batter can be frozen in cookie balls and baked according to the directions without needing to thaw.

- 1 teaspoon salt

Can I freeze M&M Cookies?
Yes, absolutely! I love this cookie recipe because you can make the dough into cookie balls and freeze them in a freezer bag! Just pull out one or two cookies and bake according to the directions! You may need to add 1-2 minutes, so watch them closely!
Freezing the dough is a great way to make the cookies ahead of time or to save for later.
I would rather freeze raw cookie dough than freeze baked cookies – but you can do either. However, there is nothing better than fresh baked cookies straight out of the oven!
How to get perfect cookies
If you want perfectly round cookies, use a mason jar lid or cookie cutter to round out the cookies as soon as they come out of the oven before you add the M&Ms. This works for cookies about 1″ or 1.5″.
Best M&M Cookie Tips:
M&M Cookies are the best when you leave them a little under-baked and then let them cool completely on the baking rack. Add extra M&Ms to the top of the cookies immediately after removing them from the oven so that the M&Ms sink into the cookies.
