Why are my thumbprint hard?
Sometimes sugar cookies are hard because you get too much flour. Too much flour can make your cookies crumble. Over cooking your sugar cookies is another reason they will become too hard.
Why did my thumbprint cookies spread?
Thumbprint cookies spread because there is not enough flour in the dough. In this specific recipe I added some extra flour to the sugar cookie mix so that the cookies would hold their shape. However, I did not want to add too much flour or the cookies would have been too hard.
Do my thumbprint cookies need to be refrigerated?
If you are only using a small amount of jam or jelly then your cookies can be stored a room temperature in an airtight container. If you put your cookies in the refrigerator, be sure to bring them to room temperature before serving.
