5 Simple Tips for Using Essential Oils
I am all about simple and easy, so here are 5 Simple Tips for Using Essential Oils!
Today I wanted to highlight some of the frequently asked questions I get on a weekly basis to help you understand your essential oils a little bit better. My goal is to help you learn how to use your oils where you feel comfortable and can see all of the great health and wellness benefits!
I am not an expert, these are just some of the tidbits of information that I have picked up over the last two years of using Young Living Essential Oils. 🙂
5 of my Simple Tips for Using Essential Oils
1) What oils can I diffuse together?
Here is a nice little equation that someone told me once. I hope it’s helpful (and easy) for you!
Blend + Blend
Single + Blend
Single + Single
Because the blends have specific properties, you never know how another blend will react with a blend. It’s a good rule of thumb to only diffuse or apply one blend at a time, and then add in some of your favorite singles! I will mix 3-4 single oils at a time or my favorite blend with a couple of singles!
My go-to evening blend is Raven (blend), Lavender (single), and Cedarwood (single). I am also a fan of Purification (blend) and Lemon (single) in my kitchen! Lime (single) and Purification (blend) has been a huge hit in my dance room this week!
2) How many drops do I use?
Disclosure::Â I am not a drop counter. I love my oils and I love to use them! Some people will try to count drops and be super specific to try to make their oils last longer. I am the girl who doesn’t count drops but just wants to make the process as easy as possible!
Diffusing:
If you’re starting out I would try 3-4 drops in my diffuser at a time. As you get used to it and see how they react with your body you can add more. Sometimes it also depends on how big your diffuser is. For my Raindrop or Home Diffuser I would add up to 9 drops of oil. 3-4 drops of each single or blend that I choose!
Internally:
If you’re putting oils in your water or food, start small (1-2 drops). Because the oils are very concentrated you do not want to add too much at first. You can always add more 🙂

My two favorite blends to take internally are:
1)Lemon, Lavender, Peppermint – Seasonal Wellness
2) Oregano, Thieves, Lemon – Immune Boosting
Applying Topically:
I would start with 1-2 drops on desired area. If you are using the oils on a child you will always want to start small and work up (as well as add a carrier oil). Now that I know some of my favorite oils to apply topically – stress away, raven, dragon time, lemon, lime, and thieves. I know that I can use 2-4 drops when I apply. Some of my oils have a roller-ball on top so I don’t even have to apply drops, I just roll it on for the desired area! Deep relief is a great roll-on to have for this!
3) Do I need to use a carrier oil?
Now, this is just for me personally, but I do not use a carrier oil for anything except oregano!
Thieves and Oregano are “hot” oils, so you will want to see how they feel on your skin or start with a carrier oil. You will always want to use a carrier oil and dilute oils if you are using them on your children. Start small and you will learn how much oil to carrier oil you need. Staring off, just put 1-2 drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil. That is a good ratio to start with and then bump it up from there!
When using oils on babies I always recommend to get the “Gentle Babies Book” on Amazon! It’s a great reference to use when learning how to effectively use oils on your kids!

4) What is a carrier oil?
Carrier Oils Include (but are not limited to):
Coconut Oil
V-6 Oil from Young Living
Olive Oil
Avocado Oil
I used V-6 Oil from Young Living to make this Beard Oil for my Boyfriend! He loves it!
I really like the V-6 Oil because it is in a pump bottle that is easy to use (once again i’m always trying to simplify). But I also like to mix oils in my favorite All Natural Body Lotion that includes Coconut Oil! Get the Recipe HERE! Olive oil is a great option because most people have it in their home.
After talking to a lot of people, it seems people prefer different carrier oils depending on how their body reacts or what they find that is easy to use.
5) How do I know what oil to use when?
There are great reference guides that you can get (or may have gotten when you signed up). But you can also download the Reference Guide for Essential Oils on your iPhone! This app is about $6.99, but it truly is worth it!

The groups offer a place to ask questions and see how others are using their oils. You can also look up specific oils online at Youngliving.com and see the recommendations for each oils.
One of my favorite resources to recommend to Mommy’s with babies is Gentle Babies. Grab this on Amazon so that you feel better about the oils you are using on your little ones.
Ultimately it comes down to the best way to use oils is just to USE THEM! Use them and love them! They are natural and come from herbs and plants! I’m sure there are instances, but it sure is hard to go wrong with simple application and diffusing! Research and learn and learn how to use them best for your lifestyle!
