How to make Grinch Sugar Cookies
To start your grinch cookies, go ahead and preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper. You can also use a silicone baking sheet if you’d like. My package of cookie mix says to bake at 375, but that’s too hot for my oven. I recommend 350 degrees.
To start, grab your cookie mix and softened butter. If your butter is cold, heat it in the microwave for 20 seconds to softened. If it needs a little more, heat in additional 5 second increments but do not melt.
In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine sugar cookie mix, softened butter, egg, and water together until crumbly.
The dough will be thick and a little dry, but keep going.
Add about 40 drops of green food dye to the cookie dough. You can add a little less or more depending on your desired color of green.
Mix well until the cookie dough comes together. I had to use my hands to get the cookie dough to come together at the end.
Use a 2 tablespoon cookie dough scoop and create heaping scoops of cookie dough balls.
Roll the cookie dough balls into the sugar and place them on the baking sheet about 2″ apart.
Bake for 8-9 minutes and remove from the oven.
Immediately add a heart to each cookie and push the edges of the cookie back into the cookie to shape.
Let cool for 10 minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a cooling rack.
Once these are cool you can store them in an airtight container or package them up to give them to friends!
Grinch Sugar Cookie Recipe
Yields: 13 cookies
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Baking time: 9 minutes
Additional time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
1 package of Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix (21 ounce package)
1/2 cup of unsalted butter (1 stick), softened
1 egg
1 tablespoon water
1/4 cup sugar (to roll cookies in) – optional
Green food coloring
Heart sprinkles
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl combine sugar cookie mix, softened butter, egg, and water together. Mix until crumbly.
Once crumbly, add about 40 drops of green food dye (or until the color green of your preference).
Mix well until the color is fully combined and creates a soft dough. I used my hands to finish mixing the cookie dough to help it come together.
Use a 2 tablespoon cookie scoop to create heaping scoops of cookie dough (you can do level scoops and create more cookies, I just wanted my cookies thick).
Gently roll dough balls in the sugar and place them on the prepared baking sheet (do not press cookies down, keep them in balls so they bake thick).
Bake for 8-9 minutes. Immediately remove cookies from the oven and add 1 heart sprinkle to each cookie. You can also shape cookies with a cookie cutter or use your fingers to push the edges in a little.
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
Notes:
My package of sugar cookie mix says to bake at 375 degrees, but I like to bake them at 350 degrees for 9 minutes.
To soften cold butter, heat for 20 seconds in the microwave. If not soft, heat for another 5 seconds.

Should Sugar Cookies be Soft or Crunchy?
Well, this is totally a personal preference, but I like soft and chewy sugar cookies! The trick is not to bake them too long! They may still look a little soft in the center but will finish baking on the baking sheet while they cool!
Is it okay to use melted butter instead of salted?
If you use melted butter instead of salted the cookies will still taste good but may fall flat and run more. If you’re making cutout cookies, sometimes you want melted butter.
Soften your butter in the microwave by heating for 20 seconds and an additional 5 seconds if needed. This will save you time if you didn’t set the butter out early enough to soften on its own.
Do I need to roll my sugar cookies in sugar?
No, you don’t need to roll your cookies in sugar. This step is completely optional but adds a fun texture on the outside of your cookie!
